Wandering Tales: Kolkata- The City of Joy

Kolkata, a city which has preserved its simplicity in best possible way. It is a state rich with history, art & literature and cultural heritage and entitled to be the ‘city of joy’; it will definitely leave its mark in your heart. 

The moment I entered the city I was excited to see all hath rickshaw, yellow ambassador taxis all around.  The weather was hot and humid but unexpected rain paid the visit daily. The city is very slow in comparison to Delhi or Mumbai. And yes you don’t have any night life in Kolkata, it is difficult to find food post 10 p.m in Kolkata. So beware of the time when you go there. Another thing which attracted me or increased my curiosity was all the houses and balcony’s had grills. Each place was caged, there was no open balcony or terrace. And I still wonder why. Probably, if any one belonging from Kolkata is reading this post they can answer me.

Speaking about the must do things in Kolkata , an evening boat ride at Prinsep Ghat is something you should definitely do and as the boat approach towards the New Howrah Bridge don’t forget to call out your name because that will echo below the bridge. This ride left me with smile and serenity which somehow disappears due to daily work life. There are different snack stalls available at the Ghat so you can grab a bite of Pav bhaji or puchkas there.  Additionally, don’t forget to have special Chai in Kulhad there. Apart from this we have Victoria Memorial also as one of the tourist spot in Kolkata where the best thing I liked was sitting in shed of tree near the lake watching ducks; that was a little soothing.  If you are looking for good restaurants and acclaimed fashion designers showrooms then Park Street is your place. Considered to be the lavish areas of Kolkata, it certainly deserves a walk around if you visit there. Also, a taxi ride on Howrah Bridge should be in your to do list if in Kolkata.


I was lucky enough to visit the state during Durga Puja so this was the first time I got an opportunity to experience Durga Puja in a state which is famous for its Pandals worldwide. Though, the streets were flooded with Bengalis making their way from one Pandal to another which made me skip one or two pandals. But, out of all the pandals I managed to see I experienced innovative, unique themes and art that not only aimed to be idiosyncratic but also deliver a meaningful message. Be it a Pandal made up of waste plastic bottles or a goddess Durga made up of jute rope or the whole colourful interior, each and everything left me awestruck. There were pandals made on automobile themes or art theme. And wandering in those pandals was definitely once in a life time experience for people like me belonging from Delhi.


 

Post my site seeing I wanted to shop a lot. Kolkata is famous for Bhagalpur silk and if you are in city then you have to buy different works and styles Sarees. I did bought 2 Sarees for myself and I am totally in love with them because of the fabric and style.  Apart from that if you visit Gariahat Market then beautiful artificial jewellery, art work, sculptures and crowd will leave you with amusement. Also, you can get a good quality leather bags from Kolkata.

If you have 2-3 days spared with you then you can possibly visit some nearby areas of Kolkata. I happened to visit Mandarmani Beach which falls in outskirts of west Bengal. The beach is nothing like what you think of Goa’s beaches. But still it is a nice place where you can stay for a day or two if you love sea.

Wandering Tales: Kerala – A Treat to The Eyes (Part 2)

In part 1 you read about my journey through beautiful Munnar and Thekkedy.  So, moving forward to my next destination which was known as the “Venetian Capital” of Kerala or the “Venice of the East”. Alappuzha (or Alleppey) Alleppey is best known for houseboat cruises along the rural Kerala backwaters, a network of soothing canals and lagoons. I rented a houseboat for a day. During day time it was so hot to sit on the deck of the boat; so I kept that plan for the evening which was then ruined by mosquitos. Still, I am glad I opted for an AC houseboat in which I could easily enjoy the serene backwaters without getting irritated from rising temperature and humidity.  Alleppey is a small village where people are settling beside the backwaters and all their commuting is done through water only.
